SUMMARY:Loire Valley Wine Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Do a Google search on the Loire Valley and\, regardless of the main topic\, you’re likely to find that the most common term used to describe the region is “diversity.” From the river’s source in the central mountainous Massif Centrale\, to its mouth at the Bay of Biscay some 620 miles to the west\, the region is rich in biological\, environmental\, architectural\, agricultural and historical abundance\, making the Loire Valley one of the most popular regional tourist destinations in France. \nThat being the case\, it should come as no surprise that\, of all of the country’s viticultural regions\, the Loire produces the greatest diversity of white\, red and pink sparkling and still wine styles. Interestingly\, the region’s winemakers\, who represent the Loire’s five major sub-regions and more that 60 AOCs\, manage to do so with a relatively small selection of both white and red grapes; primarily Sauvignon Blanc\, Chenin Blanc\, Melon de Bourgogne\, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. What makes such variation possible is the diversity of the region’s climatic conditions\, soils\, topographies and other natural conditions. \nTo learn more about what makes Loire Valley wines so diverse\, the Colonial Spirits wine team invites you to try a few representative samples at a free tasting this coming Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. We will also be offering a 20% discount on six or more bottles of every Loire white and red in the store from 9:00 am on the 25th until our 6:00 pm closing on the 26th.

SUMMARY:ABC Wine Weekend: Sale & Tasting
DESCRIPTION:A tremendously diverse grape\, Chardonnay has the remarkable ability to mirror the conditions in which it is grown. At the same time\, it is malleable enough to bend to choices made by winemakers. Fermented and aged in American Oak\, it delivers aromas of ripe tropical fruit followed by rich full-bodied vanilla and buttery flavors. Grown in cool climates and fermented in concrete or stainless steel vats\, it becomes dry and zesty\, a perfect accompaniment for a wide variety of foods. \nGiven these and other attributes\, it is small wonder that Chardonnay is the world’s most popular and widely grown white grape. However\, there was a time not that long ago that a number of wine enthusiasts and producer revolted against what was perceived as the oaky\, fruity\, high alcohol sameness of Chardonnay. With the rallying cry of “anything but Chardonnay” (ABC)\, these individuals began to eschew oak and\, in many cases\, leave Chardonnay altogether in search of other\, less ubiquitous grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc\, Viognier\, and Pinot Gris\, among others. Fortunately for everyone\, the more strident elements of the ABC movement began to mellow while many adherents of the oaky Chardonnay style eased up in pursuit of balance. \nTo celebrate this return to peaceful coexistence\, the Colonial Spirits wine team has organized a combined sale and tasting of domestic ABC wines\, leaving out Chardonnays not out of disrespect\, but rather in recognition of what the wine industry can accomplish when it branches out. That being the case\, we are offering 20% off on all domestic whites\, except Chardonnay\, this coming weekend. We will also conduct a tasting of a number of non-chards Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Join us and raise a glass to the Grand Detante.

SUMMARY:"Europe's Hidden Gems" Wine Weekend and Tasting
DESCRIPTION:This coming Saturday marks the first year anniversary of the Colonial Spirts Wine Weekend program. We started this series of sale and tasting events with the goal of providing customers the opportunity to sample from the great diversity of wines from around the world. In our tasting sessions\, we have covered a number of different wine styles and grape varieties\, and discussed the importance of climate\, soil\, and other natural conditions produce noticeably different flavor profiles of the Chardonnays\, Cabernets\, Pinot Noirs and other popular grape varieties from well-known Old and New World regions. \nThis coming weekend\, we are taking a slightly different tack by featuring wines from places that many wine consumers probably know little about – Austria\, Luxembourg\, and the Savoy and Bugey regions in France. These tend to be characterized by small\, family-run operations that make refreshingly dry predominantly white and sparkling wines from Gamay and Riesling\, as well as little known indigenous grapes with names like Auxerrois\, Poulsard\, Grüner Veltiliner and Jacquère. \nIn keeping with our usual practice\, we will be offering a 20% discount on six or more bottles of these hidden European gems from Saturday opening until Sunday closing\, and having Sunday tasting from 1:00 – 4:00 pm on. Expand your wine horizons and join us this coming weekend as we explore these hidden European gems.

SUMMARY:Italian White Wine Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Most wine consumers are familiar with Pinot Grigio\, the Italian white wine that has consistently been at or near the top of U.S. import lists for the past 15 years. As with other wine trends\, however\, the popularity of Pinot Grigio has cast something of a shadow over many other excellent Italian white wines – Soave\, Vernaccia\, Verdicchio\, Orvieto\, Vermentino\, and Gavi\, to name a few. \nThis coming weekend\, the Colonial Spirits wine team plans to cast some light on the “other white wines of Italy” with a sale and tasting event. Starting at 9:00 am on Saturday and ending at 6:00 pm on Sunday\, we will be offering a 20% discount on six or more bottles of every Italian white in the store. In addition\, we have organized a Sunday tasting from 1:00 to 4:00 pm so customers can sample and learn about the refreshingly flavorful\, food-friendly white wines from some of the Italy’s leading producers.

SUMMARY:Rosé Weekend: Sale and Tasting
DESCRIPTION:The growth in the popularity of rosé wine is one of the most remarkable wine industry trends of the past decade. This is due in large part to the changing tastes of American consumers who have gone from sweet\, unctuous “blush wines” to enthusiastic drinkers of dry rosé\, particularly those from Provence. So popular are these wines that U.S. imports from the region have increased from one-half to five million liters in the past 10 years\, making this country the second largest rosé  market in the world\, while simultaneously increasing consumer awareness and interest in rosé s from just about every other region in the world were red wine grapes are grown. \nIt happens that many rosé producers – from the “Rhône Rangers” of California to the winemakers of Australia’s Barossa Valley – blend the same grapes as their Provencal counterparts\, e.g.\, Grenache\, Syrah\, and Mourvèdre\, among others. In spite of this reliance on the same varieties\, differences in climate\, soil\, and other factors make for noticeable regional differences. In France’s Loire Valley\, for example\, the dominant red grape is Cabernet Franc\, so it follows that the region’s rosés are usually made from the primary varieties. In Bordeaux\, Cabernet Sauvignon\, Merlot\, Cabernet Franc are used in the local rosés. In Germany\, rosés are made from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir)\, while Austria’s most popular red grape\, a crossbreed known as Zweigelt\, is the sole grape used to produce the country’s wonderfully rich\, spicy pink wines. \nWith so many different rosé styles and flavor profiles available in the market\, the Colonial Spirits wine team has worked hard to obtain the finest examples of this popular wine from around the world and make them available to our customers. This coming weekend\, we’ll be celebrating the beginning of the rosé season. Starting at 9:00 am Saturday and ending at 6:00 pm Sunday we’ll be offering a 20% discount on six or more bottles of any rosé in the store. We’ve also scheduled a tasting from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday for customers who would like to sample some of our old favorites and new arrivals. Start your celebration of spring this weekend. We look forward to seeing you.

SUMMARY:Cabernet Sauvignon Weekend: Sale & Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Cabernet Sauvignon is well known among wine enthusiasts as the principal and\, in some cases\, the only grape used in the production many of the world’s finest red wines. Unlike wines made from other international grapes\, the characteristics of which typically reflect where they are grown\, the flavor profile of a Cabernet is unmistakable. Indeed\, given a warm climate\, well-drained soil\, a well-timed harvest\, and a skilled winemaker\, Cabernet is capable of delivering complex\, well-balanced flavorful wines reminiscent of the finest Bordeaux\, regardless of location. The coming Sunday\, the Colonial Spirits wine team is offering customers the opportunity to experience \nCabernets Sauvignons representing some of the best-known regions during a free tasting from 1:00 pm to 4: 00 pm. In addition\, every Cabernet and Cabernet blend from the same regions – California’s Napa and Sonoma Valleys\, Washington’s Columbia Valleys\, Argentina\, Chile\, and Bordeaux’s left bank AOCs\, will be offered at a 20% discount for six or more bottles from Saturday’s 9:00 am opening until Sunday’s 6:00 pm closing. Stop by this weekend and experience the unique characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon and pick up a few bottles of your favorites.

SUMMARY:South Africa Weekend: Sale and Tasting
DESCRIPTION:The production of fine wines in South Africa is primarily based in the West and Southwestern Cape region where cold ocean currents moderate the intense heat of the African sun. The result is a Mediterranean climate not unlike that of Southern France. Unlike the limestone and clay marl soils of the Rhone\, Provence\, and Southwestern France\, however\, those of the Cape are characterized by a rich diversity – from decomposing granite\, sandstone\, and clay-marl in mountainous areas to the rich alluvial soil of river valleys. Such variety allows South African winemakers to develop vineyard sites suited to specific grape varieties — from Chardonnay and Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc to the Rhône and Bordeaux-style blends\, and even single varietal Pinot Noirs. \nWith such a diversity of terroirs and grapes\, it’s not surprising that South African wines are characterized by a range of styles\, from bold\, herbal Cabernets to fresh\, fruity unoaked Chenin Blanc. It is with this diversity in mind that the Colonial Spirits wine team has organized a South African wine sale and tasting event this coming Saturday and Sunday. This includes a 20% discount on six or more bottles of every South African wine in the store\, as well as the opportunity to try some of the region’s wine from 1:00 To 4:00 pm on Sunday.

SUMMARY:Bordeaux Weekend - Sale and Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Often simply called Bordeaux\, France’s most famous wine region is actually comprised of upwards of 35 different sub-regions and 57 AOCs (appellation d’origine contrôlée or “controlled designation of origin”). Divided by the Gironde Estuary and the Garonne and Dordogne rivers\, Bordeaux is best known as the home of Château Latour\, Château Margaux\, Margaux\, Château Haut-Brion\, Château Mouton Rothschild\, and other wines prized by wealthy collectors and sell for hundreds\, if not thousands\, of dollars a bottle. \nWhat many wine consumers don’t know\, however\, is that most Bordeaux wines cost less than $20 dollars a bottle\, and there are lesser known chateaus from the Haut-Médoc\, Saint Émilion\, and other top AOCs that go for between $25 and $35. Using the same grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon\, Merlot and Cabernet Franc – and governed by the same regulations as the top producers\, Bordeaux’s many small chateaux make excellent wines that are often overlooked simply because they lack the marketing\, distribution power\, and name recognition of the big houses. \nThis coming weekend\, the Colonial Spirits wine team will try to rectify this situation by offering every red Bordeaux in the store at a 20% discount on six or more bottles. This offer includes generic Bordeaux to top AOCs. In addition\, customers will also have the opportunity to sample Cru Bourgeois\, Bordeaux Supérieur\, and other regional classification level wines at our Sunday tasting that will be taking place from 1-4 PM to see how much they have to offer in terms of taste and value.

SUMMARY:Southern Italian Reds Weekend Part 2
DESCRIPTION:With approximately 350 officially recognized wine styles and as many as 2000 grape varieties\, Italy can present a confusing picture to even the most dedicated wine buffs. This is especially true of Sicily and Sardinia\, the country’s two most potentially promising wine producing regions. That this should be the case is due in large part to history and politics. As far back as pre-Roman times\, both islands shipped wines throughout the Mediterranean region. Over the intervening centuries\, however\, and even up to the post-WWII period\, wine production\, and to some extent quality in both regions declined. \nThus\, while foreign markets starting to embrace Chianti\, Barolo\, Pinot Grigio\, Lambrusco\, and other mainland wines\, the wines and grapes of the two islands languished in obscurity. It is only in the last 20 years or so that dedicated winemakers have begun to take advantage of Sicily’s and Sardinia’s Mediterranean temperatures\, hours of sunshine\, and soil types to create wines of power and character. \nThis coming weekend\, Colonial Spirits will be offering the red wines of Sicily and Sardinia at a 20% discount on six or more bottles. In addition\, we will be conducting a tasting of wines from the two regions from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday\, the 22nd. With Thanksgiving around the corner\, you might find one of these wines to be a great accompaniment to your holiday meal.

SUMMARY:Southern Italy Sale and Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Most wine enthusiasts today are familiar with the wines of Tuscany\, the Piedmont\, Lombardy and other northern regions of Italy. In ancient times\, however\, Southern Italy was the center of the wine world\, thanks to the efforts of Greek colonists who introduced grapes and winemaking techniques to regions of what most people know today as the foot of the Italian boot. \nWith the fall of the Roman Empire\, however\, southern wine production\, along with the region’s economy\, entered a period of decline that has persisted up to today. The good news is that the grapes introduced by the ancient Greeks are still grown\, and talented southern winemakers are producing fabulous wines\, some of which rival the greats of the north in quality and price\, if not notoriety. \nTo help make up for that lack\, the Colonial Spirits wine team is holding a 20% off sale of six or more bottles of the red wines from four of Southern Italy’s top regions\, Campania\, Puglia\, Basilicata\, and Molise. The sale starts are 9:00 am this coming Saturday and ends at 6:00 pm Sunday. Customers are also invited to sample a selection of the sale wines at a tasting event from 1:00 – 4:00 on Sunday. Join us and take advantage of this opportunity to learn about and purchase some of the finest red wines that Italy has to offer.

SUMMARY:Rhone and Rhone Style Wine Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Although they share the same river\, the Northern and Southern Rhône Valley are quite different in terms of climate\, soils\, topography\, and grape varieties. There are also significant price differences between the wines of the two areas\, with those of the North being more expensive. The Southern Rhone\, on the other hand\, is much more important in terms of quantity. Not only does the region produce more than 53 million gallons of wine annually\, its appellations — from Côtes du Rhône Villages to Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Pape are known for their quality and value. \nIndeed\, the wines of the Southern Rhône are so popular that producers in other regions\, most notably California and Australia\, have adopted its grapes and winemaking techniques. To celebrate the Southern Rhône\, Colonial Spirits will be offering a 20% discount on six or more bottles of every wine from the area this coming Saturday and Sunday. The same discount also applies to those produced by “Rhône Rangers” in California and Australia. Finally\, for customers interested in trying before buying\, the wine team will be conducting a tasting of selected Rhone wines\, as well as those of similar style from other regions\, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm on Sunday the 25th. We look forward to seeing you there. \n

SUMMARY:Malbec Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Not since the California Chardonnay boom of the 1990s has the wine industry experience a New World success to match the popularity of Argentine Malbecs\, the grape that put Argentina on the wine map and helped make the country the world’s fifth largest wine producer. \nWhat most wine enthusiasts don’t know\, however\, is that the Malbec grape originated in France\, either Bordeaux or Burgundy\, but it is Cahors that Malbec calls home. Cahors produces an excellent wine made from a minimum of 70% ‘Cot’\, as the grape is called locally\, but Argentina’s success has led some French producers to prominently display the word “Malbec” on their labels. \nIn any event\, customers will have the opportunity to stock up on Malbecs from both countries this coming weekend with a 20% discount on six or more bottles. In addition\, there will also be a Malbec tasting on Sunday the 11th from 1 pm to 4 PM.

SUMMARY:Sangiovese Wine Weekend
DESCRIPTION:It’s safe to say that even people who rarely drink wine have sampled or at least know the name Chianti. Strangely enough\, however\, few wine enthusiasts are familiar with Sangiovese\, the grape from which Chianti\, and a number of other Italian wines\, is made\, either as the sole grape or as part of a blend. This lack of awareness is due to a number of factors\, starting with the fact that Sangiovese\, the most widely planted grape in Italy\, is known by many different names; Brunello\, Prugnolo Gentile\, and Nielluccio being just a few. \nIt is in Tuscany\, however\, where Sangiovese reigns supreme and it is that area that the Colonial Sprits wine team has chosen to feature in this coming weekend’s World Wine Regions sale and tasting. As is the case with every regional wine event\, every Sangiovese-based wine in the store will be available at a 20% discount for six or more bottles. We will also be conducting a tasting of a few featured wines on Sunday the 27th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Pinot Grigio/Gris Wine Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Although most wine drinkers are familiar with the popular Italian white varietal Pinot Grigio\, few are aware that the grape is a mutated form of the Pinot Noir from the Burgundy region of France\, where it’s called Pinot Gris (grey pinot). This widely disseminated and increasingly fashionable grape is grown around the world to make a soft\, gently perfumed wines with more color and substance than most other whites. This coming weekend\, the Colonial Spirits wine team is offering customers a 20% discount on 6 or more bottles of Pinot Gris / Pinot Grigio. If you’d like to sample before purchasing\, we will be hold in a tasting of PGs from different regions from 1 pm to 4 pm on Sunday the 13rd.

SUMMARY:Alsace Weekend 08/08-08/09
DESCRIPTION:  \nImagine that you have been transported to a wine region in Northern Europe bordered by the Rhine River.  The towns and villages have names like Heiligenstein\, Kirchheim\, and Zellenberg\, and Riesling is the dominant grape. Given the circumstances\, you’d probably think that you were in Germany\, but you would be wrong. The place is Alsace\, and although it has been occupied by Germany at various times throughout history\, the region\, its spirit and wines are decidedly French. \nHowever\, unlike the other wine producing regions of the country\, and most of Europe for that matter\, the wines of Alsace (predominantly white except for some Pinot Noir) are named for the grape varieties from which they are made\, i.e.\, Riesling\, Pinot Gris\, Pinot Blanc\, Sylvaner\, Muscat\, and Gewurztraminer. \nThis Saturday and Sunday\, every Alsatian wine in the store will be on sale at a 20% discount for six or more bottles. In addition\, there will be a tasting of Rieslings and other white wines of the region from 1:00 – 4:00 pm on Sunday. \nOne last note\, people who think that Rieslings are sweet have probably never had the Alsatian variety\, which are dry. Even the region’s late harvest and Sauterne styles have a steely backbone unique to Riesling that adds a distinctive complexity to the overall flavor profile. So if you’ve never tried Alsatian wines\, or are a fan of what the region has to offer\, stop by the store this weekend.

SUMMARY:New Zealand Weekend + Tasting
DESCRIPTION:New Zealand is one of the most isolated wine producing regions on the planet. It’s also one of the smallest\, accounting for less than 1% of the world crop. In spite of such apparent disadvantages\, the Kiwis manage to sell two thirds of their crop in the world market. Obviously\, they’re doing something right. \nTo find out what that might be\, stop by the store this Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and sample some New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs\, the wine that put the country’s wine industry on the map. If you already know about and appreciate the crystalline flavors and bracing acidity that make New Zealand’s outstanding white unique\, you can also take advantage of our Saturday and Sunday 20% discount on six or more bottles on every New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in the store.

SUMMARY:Loire Valley Weekend + Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Flowing from the interior highlands of the Massif Central west to the Bay of Biscay west to the North Atlantic Coast\, the Loire Valley is France’s most diverse wine region.
