SUMMARY:Italian White Wine Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Most wine consumers are familiar with Pinot Grigio\, the Italian white wine that has consistently been at or near the top of U.S. import lists for the past 15 years. As with other wine trends\, however\, the popularity of Pinot Grigio has cast something of a shadow over many other excellent Italian white wines – Soave\, Vernaccia\, Verdicchio\, Orvieto\, Vermentino\, and Gavi\, to name a few. \nThis coming weekend\, the Colonial Spirits wine team plans to cast some light on the “other white wines of Italy” with a sale and tasting event. Starting at 9:00 am on Saturday and ending at 6:00 pm on Sunday\, we will be offering a 20% discount on six or more bottles of every Italian white in the store. In addition\, we have organized a Sunday tasting from 1:00 to 4:00 pm so customers can sample and learn about the refreshingly flavorful\, food-friendly white wines from some of the Italy’s leading producers.

SUMMARY:Rosé Weekend: Sale and Tasting
DESCRIPTION:The growth in the popularity of rosé wine is one of the most remarkable wine industry trends of the past decade. This is due in large part to the changing tastes of American consumers who have gone from sweet\, unctuous “blush wines” to enthusiastic drinkers of dry rosé\, particularly those from Provence. So popular are these wines that U.S. imports from the region have increased from one-half to five million liters in the past 10 years\, making this country the second largest rosé  market in the world\, while simultaneously increasing consumer awareness and interest in rosé s from just about every other region in the world were red wine grapes are grown. \nIt happens that many rosé producers – from the “Rhône Rangers” of California to the winemakers of Australia’s Barossa Valley – blend the same grapes as their Provencal counterparts\, e.g.\, Grenache\, Syrah\, and Mourvèdre\, among others. In spite of this reliance on the same varieties\, differences in climate\, soil\, and other factors make for noticeable regional differences. In France’s Loire Valley\, for example\, the dominant red grape is Cabernet Franc\, so it follows that the region’s rosés are usually made from the primary varieties. In Bordeaux\, Cabernet Sauvignon\, Merlot\, Cabernet Franc are used in the local rosés. In Germany\, rosés are made from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir)\, while Austria’s most popular red grape\, a crossbreed known as Zweigelt\, is the sole grape used to produce the country’s wonderfully rich\, spicy pink wines. \nWith so many different rosé styles and flavor profiles available in the market\, the Colonial Spirits wine team has worked hard to obtain the finest examples of this popular wine from around the world and make them available to our customers. This coming weekend\, we’ll be celebrating the beginning of the rosé season. Starting at 9:00 am Saturday and ending at 6:00 pm Sunday we’ll be offering a 20% discount on six or more bottles of any rosé in the store. DESCRIPTION:This seems to be our year because we have booked another unbelievable tasting for 2016. We met Giorgio from Chile\, Paul\, Stefan\, Frank\, and Carmen from Germany\, and now we are meeting Nicole (native to the USA\, but currently resides in Italy). Nicole is the Folio Fine Wine Partners Spanish wine guru. She is more than the traditional portfolio representative because\, unlike most\, she resides in the country\, in this case\, Spain\, that she oversees the sales of. Spain has long been a hotbed for good wine\, especially for everyday wines\, but did you know that in regards to vineyards sites and age\, Spain has both vineyards and vines that are older than their better known European counterparts\, i.e. France\, Germany\, and Italy. It is due to this\, along with younger more adventurous winemakers\, that makes Spain the new ‘it’ wine country. However interesting I may make it sound\, nothing can replace the enthusiasm and knowledge of someone who gets to live and see first hand how Spain and its wines are evolving. Nicole is just that person\, and Folio is the portfolio for it. With a portfolio that is only equaled by the self-described SPANISH GUY Jorge Ordonez\, Nicole has prime choices of wines to choose from that will  not only showcase the varietals\, but also the regions from which they are from. We currently have three of the wines being tasted this evening that you are welcome to pick up and try for yourself so you know what you are getting into – Palacios/Remondo\, Leda\, and Vall Llach. But\, you could always wait. DESCRIPTION:We are once again highly fortunate to host Frank Heyden\, Stefan Bollig\, and Paul Anheuser from Weingut Dr. Heyden\, Weingut Bollig-Lehnert\, and Weingut Paul Anheuser respectively. It has been a couple of years since the three of them have graced us with their presence\, but with much anticipation\, and a lot of hard work\, we were able to book them for a few hours. \nIn addition to these three lovely fellows\, we will also have a fourth winemaker by the name of Dr. Carmen von Nell-Breuning. Dr. Carmen is the owner and winemaker for C. von Nell-Breuning located in Ruwer\, a sub-district of the Mosel. Her wines are described as being rich with both flavors and minerality\, a feat not uncommon for the Ruwer. However\, you don’t have to take my word for it. Instead\, you can stop by and explore her wines yourself. With Carmen and the dynamic trio stopping by\, this is an event that shouldn’t be missed.

DESCRIPTION:We have been preaching about the wines from Falernia out of Elqui Valley\, Chile for the past year. Some of you have gotten on board\, thank you. But\, some of you still haven’t. I know\, blindly trying something is not the easiest choice to make especially if you are talking about a bottle of wine that can cost anywhere from $13-$25 if not your dinner (assuming someone made a bad wine pairing recommendation). However\, for those that still haven’t boarded the Falernia train and are looking for that extra push in the right direction here is your opportunity. On Saturday\, February 13th (Could this have been better planned?) from 1-4 PM we will be hosting Giorgio Flessati\, winemaker for Falernia. I was fortunate enough to have met Giorgio back in mid-2015\, and all I can say is that everyone is in for a real treat. Giorgio will be pouring his wines this fine afternoon for anyone and everyone that either made plans to stop by or just happened to stop by. SUMMARY:South Africa Weekend: Sale and Tasting
DESCRIPTION:The production of fine wines in South Africa is primarily based in the West and Southwestern Cape region where cold ocean currents moderate the intense heat of the African sun. The result is a Mediterranean climate not unlike that of Southern France. Unlike the limestone and clay marl soils of the Rhone\, Provence\, and Southwestern France\, however\, those of the Cape are characterized by a rich diversity – from decomposing granite\, sandstone\, and clay-marl in mountainous areas to the rich alluvial soil of river valleys. Such variety allows South African winemakers to develop vineyard sites suited to specific grape varieties — from Chardonnay and Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc to the Rhône and Bordeaux-style blends\, and even single varietal Pinot Noirs. \nWith such a diversity of terroirs and grapes\, it’s not surprising that South African wines are characterized by a range of styles\, from bold\, herbal Cabernets to fresh\, fruity unoaked Chenin Blanc. It is with this diversity in mind that the Colonial Spirits wine team has organized a South African wine sale and tasting event this coming Saturday and Sunday. This includes a 20% discount on six or more bottles of every South African wine in the store\, as well as the opportunity to try some of the region’s wine from 1:00 To 4:00 pm on Sunday.

This is our most attended event of the year and one we all look forward to. There is something about red wines that makes us giddy. It could be the abundance of fruit\, or the age-ability\, or re-experiencing an old favorite\, whatever it may be\, red wine is king of wines. \nReminiscent of our past Grand Red tastings\, we will be pushing the boundaries by having available about 50 bottles of DIFFERENT reds per weekend for our attendees to try. Each weekend will be unique so it would be nice if you could make it to both weekends\, but is by no means necessary. And we will cover all the bases as far as types\, styles\, varietals\, prices\, and appellations are concerned. \nLike past events\, we will have our Grand Tastings discount activate. For those that don’t know what that discount is\, it is get 10% off of 6-11 bottles of wines\, or get 25% off of 12+ bottles of wine. SUMMARY:Bordeaux Weekend - Sale and Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Often simply called Bordeaux\, France’s most famous wine region is actually comprised of upwards of 35 different sub-regions and 57 AOCs (appellation d’origine contrôlée or “controlled designation of origin”). Divided by the Gironde Estuary and the Garonne and Dordogne rivers\, Bordeaux is best known as the home of Château Latour\, Château Margaux\, Margaux\, Château Haut-Brion\, Château Mouton Rothschild\, and other wines prized by wealthy collectors and sell for hundreds\, if not thousands\, of dollars a bottle. \nWhat many wine consumers don’t know\, however\, is that most Bordeaux wines cost less than $20 dollars a bottle\, and there are lesser known chateaus from the Haut-Médoc\, Saint Émilion\, and other top AOCs that go for between $25 and $35. Using the same grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon\, Merlot and Cabernet Franc – and governed by the same regulations as the top producers\, Bordeaux’s many small chateaux make excellent wines that are often overlooked simply because they lack the marketing\, distribution power\, and name recognition of the big houses. \nThis coming weekend\, the Colonial Spirits wine team will try to rectify this situation by offering every red Bordeaux in the store at a 20% discount on six or more bottles. This offer includes generic Bordeaux to top AOCs. In addition\, customers will also have the opportunity to sample Cru Bourgeois\, Bordeaux Supérieur\, and other regional classification level wines at our Sunday tasting that will be taking place from 1-4 PM to see how much they have to offer in terms of taste and value.

SUMMARY:Southern Italian Reds Weekend Part 2
DESCRIPTION:With approximately 350 officially recognized wine styles and as many as 2000 grape varieties\, Italy can present a confusing picture to even the most dedicated wine buffs. This is especially true of Sicily and Sardinia\, the country’s two most potentially promising wine producing regions. That this should be the case is due in large part to history and politics. As far back as pre-Roman times\, both islands shipped wines throughout the Mediterranean region. Over the intervening centuries\, however\, and even up to the post-WWII period\, wine production\, and to some extent quality in both regions declined. \nThus\, while foreign markets starting to embrace Chianti\, Barolo\, Pinot Grigio\, Lambrusco\, and other mainland wines\, the wines and grapes of the two islands languished in obscurity. It is only in the last 20 years or so that dedicated winemakers have begun to take advantage of Sicily’s and Sardinia’s Mediterranean temperatures\, hours of sunshine\, and soil types to create wines of power and character. \nThis coming weekend\, Colonial Spirits will be offering the red wines of Sicily and Sardinia at a 20% discount on six or more bottles. In addition\, we will be conducting a tasting of wines from the two regions from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday\, the 22nd. With Thanksgiving around the corner\, you might find one of these wines to be a great accompaniment to your holiday meal.

SUMMARY:Finca Hispana Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Finca Hispana is a cooperative\, but unlike most\, its main priority is to glorify Spanish wines by producing high-quality wines. One would think that quality is directly related to cost\, but in this case it’s not. The wines from Finca Hispana\, at least those being tasted this weekend\, are all less than $15 per bottle but deliver as if they were $20+. How is this possible? I wish I had the answer\, but Peter Deutsch\, the man behind the brand\, does. Peter will be here this afternoon to taste through some of his wines and open our minds to the world of wonder that is Spanish wines. This is a great event to not only broaden your horizon\, if you aren’t familiar with wine from Spain\, but also to stock up on some great wines. Think stocking stuffer\, at the dinner table\, or party as their are few wines as good for as little dough. \nCarpe Vinum!

With a knack for winemaking and a gift for understanding what the consumer wants. Peter and his winemaking team have been producing some of the most interesting wines to come out of Sonoma\, and if you have had these wines in the past you know exactly what I mean. Had Miles from Sideways the movie tried Merriam’s Merlot then none of his rants would have occurred. Too bad he didn’t\, would have saved a lot of time. In ancient times\, however\, Southern Italy was the center of the wine world\, thanks to the efforts of Greek colonists who introduced grapes and winemaking techniques to regions of what most people know today as the foot of the Italian boot. \nWith the fall of the Roman Empire\, however\, southern wine production\, along with the region’s economy\, entered a period of decline that has persisted up to today.
