SUMMARY:L'Aventure Languedoc : The Adventure Continues
DESCRIPTION:What is Languedoc? \nOur exploration of the Languedoc continues with another big tasting of whites\, roses\, and reds from France’s Wild West.  As a refresher\, Languedoc-Roussillon is located in southern France\, spanning the Mediterranean coastline from the French border with Spain in the south\, to the region of Provence to the east. It is the largest wine producing region and vineyard area not only in France\, but also in the world. The region is home to several climate and soil types which factor into the wide variety of wines produced here. \n\nThe wines of Languedoc offer an exceptional selection of quality\, value and character\, reflecting the elements from which they come. The wines are blessed by an auspicious blend of natural factors\, such as abundant sunshine\, the Mediterranean Sea\, mountains\, as well as history and culture and a revolutionary spirit. These are some of the most authentic wines in France\, and today’s pioneering winemakers are combining time honored traditions with new techniques to revitalize the region’s appellations. Consumers can feel confident with their purchases and afford to discover all that Languedoc has to offer. \nThe majority of the region has a Mediterranean climate and clay/limestone soils. However\, there are pockets with more continental and Atlantic influences as well as schist and granite soils. The region is also characterized by low rainfall levels; some areas see the lowest rainfall in France. Strong winds area also prevalent and the combination of all of these factors mean that Languedoc lends itself to very natural methods of farming and wine production; 30% of all of France’s organic wine comes from Languedoc. \nChateau de Flaugergues Coteaux du Languedoc rose\nChateau de Flaugergues Coteaux du Languedoc La Méjanelle rouge\nToques et Clochers ‘Océanique’ Limoux\nDomaine Collin Crémant de Limoux\nDomaine des Jougla ‘Initiale’ St-Chinian rose\nDomaine Rimbert ‘Les Travers de Marceau’ St-Chinian\nMas du Colombel Faugères

DESCRIPTION:This is one of the top three events of the year\, and it shouldn’t be missed!  This is a two part event\, so if you can’t make it to one you can come to the other.  Please note that we won’t be pouring the same wines both weekends. \nThe Spring Fling allows us to showcase more niche\, expensive and unique wines than other tastings while still presenting old classics that have been favorites year after year.  There will be about 50 bottles open this weekend\, ranging from simple whites to complex sparklers and roses. \nYou don’t want to miss this weekend because no one wine will be the same.  There will be a case discount that is only available at this tasting. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nThe Nics

SUMMARY:Wente Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Wente is a unique story\, but what is more unique than the story is the wine. The wines are predominantly from the Livermore Valley\, which is an AVA within the San Francisco Bay AVA (Central Coast AVA). The Wente wines showcase beautiful restraint when it comes to oak and fruit\, and have just enough acidity to balance the riper fruit characters and make your mouth water. For those that don’t know the brand\, this tasting is a great opportunity to become familiarized with it\, for those that do know the brand; it’s free wine. Either way\, everyone wins! So stop by and try an old favorite\, that has changed the everyday wine landscape for the better.

SUMMARY:2014 Seminar Series: South America
DESCRIPTION:This is the second class of the year\, and I can’t wait to have it. For those that made it to our first class and remember how it was a “work in progress\,” I have found more chairs for us to sit on! It’s the little things in life that make me happy. 😉 I also didn’t forget that I needed to have a list of the wines being tasted so that notes could be taken. \n  \nNow to the serious stuff… \n  \nWe will be covering South American wines this time around\, which is predominantly made up by Chile and Argentina. However\, wines from Peru\, Uruguay\, and Brazil are available in MA\, which I will cover but may not have samples for since they are very limited. Hopefully we can fill up this class like we did last one. \n  \nAs a test to see how many of you are paying attention to our website I am opening registration for the South American Wines Seminar right now\, Thursday\, February the 27th. There are only 14 seats available so please email me (nicolay@colonialspirits.com) ASAP. \n  \nGood Luck!

SUMMARY:Meet the Winemaker: Peter Spann from Spann Vineyards
DESCRIPTION:Ever heard of Spann Vineyards? Neither had I until recently\, but after having tasted through these excellent wines I’m glad I did. \n  \nSpann Vineyards is a tiny operation in Sonoma County that\, much like Bedrock\, likes to produce off the beaten path wines. The idea behind Spann is to produce unique blends that boast the California fruit while maintaining balance; and I have to say they have done just that. The Spann Vineyards’ wines are excellent across the line\, displaying beautiful fruit characteristic\, supple tannins\, and bright acidity. All the wines had some age to them (the youngest was from the 2010 vintage)\, and not one of the wines exceeds a production of 1000 cases\, so there isn’t a whole lot of this wine available in the market. \n  \nSpann Vineyards’ reach\, as far as wine making is concerned\, is quite large when you consider they produce wines like the “Mo Jo\,” a “Super Tuscan” style blend\, or their “Ying Yang” Chard & Viognier blend that displays both the crispness of the Chard and roundness of the Viognier very well. So needless to say\, these wines are\, at the very least\, intriguing. They are something quite different\, but in a good way. Additionally\, the Spann wines are great values. They are all reasonably priced when you take in regard the precision with which these wines are produced\, and the quality they offer\, a “Grand Slam!” some would say. \n  \nIn conclusion\, this is an opportunity not to be missed as it’s a very rare and wonderful occasion to have a winery owner/winemaker in town pouring and enlightening us about the wines they sweat and bleed over. \n  \nHope to see you all there.\nNic C \n  \nThese are the wines that will be available at the tasting…\n1) Chardonnay-Viognier North Coast 2010\n2) ‘Mo Zin’ Red Blend California 2010\n3) ‘Mo Jo’ Red Blend Sonoma County 2005\n4) ‘The Classic Four’ Red Blend Sonoma County 2010\n5) Cabernet Sauvignon Mayacamas Range (Sonoma County) 2007

SUMMARY:Der Germans are Coming! German Wine Tasting with the Winemakers
DESCRIPTION:We are once again being graced by the presence of Frank Heyden (from Weingut Dr. Heyden)\, Paul Anheuser (from Weingut Paul Anheuser)\, and Jill Bollig (From Weingut Bollig-Lehnert. Stefan had to tend to an emergency at the winery). The three representatives (that make up about half of our German wine selection) will be here Friday night from 5 to 8 PM\, to pour wines and educate us about the ins and outs of wine making in Germany. This is a VERY special event since it has been almost two years since we last had this wonderful group come by and pour. Please do not miss this event because you are sure to hear your friends talk about it\, and be jealous of them. So\, in order to help you not forget just remeber this one line\, “Der Germans are Coming!”

SUMMARY:Jewel Box (3L Box Wine) Tasting
DESCRIPTION:The 3L box wine industry is booming\, and why shouldn’t it. Considering some of the wines I have tried that come in that size\, I’m surprised it’s not growing at an exponential rate. Anyway\, Jewel Box is the newest release from our friends at Underdog Wine Group (Cupcake\, Big House\, Fish Eye\, and so many more). This is their take on what a $24.99 box wine should taste like; a direct competitor of our classically dressed friend that has dominated that price point for at least a decade. For those that are interested but have always been afraid of investing in that much wine\, this is the perfect opportunity to try. For those that like the Big House brand and our looking for a step up\, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day with Domaine Chandon
DESCRIPTION:This is the 2nd sparkling wine tasting of the month\, and what could be better than the house known for brands like Moet et Chandon\, Veuve Clicquot\, and Dom Perignon? Domaine Chandon is Moet et Chandon’s California sister. Where Moet is your typical precise\, clean\, and austere Champagne\, Domaine is your heavier\, more robust\, sits in the sun all day style. This doesn’t mean you should’t take Domaine seriously\, on the contrary\, you should take them very seriously\, especially with blends like the Etoile. But as always\, you don’t have to take my word. Just stop by and see for yourself.

SUMMARY:William Hill 'Coastal Selection' Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:William Hill has been in the business of winemaking for quite sometime\, so much so that his name is synonymous with quality. However\, there was one area of the business the winery was unable to manage\, and that was demand. William Hill was unable to keep up with demand when trying to maintain the quality that www all know them for. So what did they do? They released a new line of wine known as “Coastal Selection.” The William Hill Coastal Selection comes in three varietals: Chard\, Cab Sauv and Mer\, and although the the price is very sharp ($14.99 per bottle)\, the quality is even sharper. These wines boast balance and finesse that very few wines can achieve for under $20. But you don’t have to take my word\, you can try the wines yourself on Saturday\, February 8 from 2-5pm. This is the first of many tastings for this brand\, and based on what I tried\, we can expect it to be around for quite some time.
