Mezcal vs. Islay: The Smoke Showdown

Mezcal is an amazing spirit that remains fairly mysterious.  There seems to be a persisting association with tequila – and it is made from agave – but the difference is extreme.  The price tends to be a little extreme too, so it is no wonder that people shy away from fine Mezcal.

The best association, with a known category, is with Islay Scotch Whisky.  The smoky characteristic is what most people immediately think of when ‘Islay’ is mentioned and the same should be so for Mezcal.

At this special tasting event world class, single village Mezcals will be sampled and discussed along side a familiar selection of Islay Whisky.

The tasting will take place on Friday, November 8th.

Annual Oktoberfest Beer Tasting

Our annual Oktoberfest Beer Tasting is just around the corner, this Saturday from 1-5pm to be exact, and it’s going to be better than ever.  With over 35 beers to sample from that will pair brilliantly with the fatty brats and sausages that we will be grilling, this is an event not to be missed.  As always this is a FREE event so the more friends and family members you bring, the more fun we will all have.  Hope to see everyone there!! PROST!!

Irish and Scottish Malts – Sept. 11th at 6 and 7pm

Colonial Spirits is honored to host a presentation from Master of Whiskey, Ross Graham.  Ross will present the traditional Scottish and Irish styles of whiskey and explain the differences between the two.  Samples of classic whisk(e)ys will be poured and discussed.

The seminar is free, but space is limited so please reserve a place at either 6:00pm or 7:00pm.  There will be open tasting and Q&A following each presentation.

Bourbon Barrel Selection – August 17th, 5pm

Your favorite whiskeys are ones that consistently deliver a specific flavor profile, never letting you down. In order to ensure this quality, a careful blend of whiskeys from a number of barrels is created by the master distiller. After all, each and every barrel is a little different and even the height at which they are stored in the warehouse effects how the whiskey develops over many years.

Colonial Spirits has been offered a unique opportunity to purchase a single barrel of whiskey from either Blanton’s or Eagle Rare. This barrel will be a unique expression of the whiskey and, although similar to the fine offerings we see on the shelves, is distinct and sold only by Colonial Spirits. The unblended, raw product from one single barrel will be bottled exclusively for Colonial Spirits and labeled as such. These offerings are available only in the quantity left in the chosen barrel and will present an irreplaceable interpretation of a classic Bourbon.

The selection will take place on Friday, August 17th at 5pm and we want you to decide with us. We have 3 samples of Eagle Rare and 2 sample of Blanton’s, however only about 150mL of each so the opportunity to taste and vote is limited.

Please join us and bring your most discerning palate in order to assist in choosing the best barrel to be bottled and offered this fall.
