In the 1700โs, Massachusetts was a large rum producer. There were perhaps as many as 60 distilleries in the Bay State. In fact, rum played an important role in the founding of the United States. It was one of the fledgling countryโs export products, it was a secondary currency, and was used to pay and improve the moral of the soldiers.
The founder of Privateer True American Rumโs family made rum in Massachusetts in the 1700โs and battled the British as a Privateer during the American Revolution. Andrew Cabot (1750-1791) was a merchant and rum distiller who was also one of Americaโs most legendary American Privateers. He commanded a fleet of ships, including the Pilgrim, the Revolution, and the True American, for which Privateerโs flagship rum is named.
Crafted locally in Essex County, Massachusetts, you could say rum has always been in Privateerโs blood. Today, Privateer distills their high quality True American Amber Rum and Silver Reserve Rum year round. In May of 2013 Colonial Spirits received samples from several different barrels at the Willett distillery.ย After tasting each sample with customers there was an obvious outlier in the groupโฆ a particularly rich and woody 10yr old bourbon.ย We ordered the entire barrel to be bottled exclusively for Colonial Spirits.ย Demand for Willett bourbons left the small distillery struggling to keep up and they discontinued the barrel program, needing everything they could get to keep up with production. ย We were quite fortunate to be the last store to receive such a special allocation of bourbon.ย While the folks at Willett worked to keep up with demand our prized barrel got another year of aging.
